Dry Eye Management

Dry Eye Treatment

Dry Eyes is a very common problem and is faced by many. The condition occurs when the tears produced do not provide the needed lubrication to the eyes. Dry eyes can also occur when your eyes are not able to generate enough tears or when the tears are of poor quality.

Dry eyes can be quite uncomfortable as well. People suffering from dry eyes also complain of sting or burning in the eyes. Some may experience dry eyes only during certain conditions like when they are traveling in a plane or when in a cold room.

If you are suffering from any such symptoms, undergoing treatment for dry eyes can prove to be beneficial. This eye treatment includes a few changes in your lifestyle and the use of eye drops. In most cases, these measures will help control the symptoms if any.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of dry eyes mostly affect both your eyes and they are:

  • A burning sensation in your eyes along with a stinging feeling
  • Formation of stringy mucus near the eyes
  • Highly sensitive to light
  • Redness in the eye
  • Having difficulty putting on contact lenses
  • Having watery eyes
  • Fatigue or blurred vision

When should you see a doctor?

You need to see a doctor if you have been symptoms of dry eyes for a prolonged period. If you are suffering from painful, red, or irritated eyes for long, it is time you see a doctor to know the reasons behind the same.

The Causes

Dry eyes can occur due to various reasons. Some of them include:

Tear Glands or Ducts

When the tear glands do not produce enough tears, the person can suffer from dry eyes. The tears are a combination of water, mucus, and fatty oils and this composition keeps our eyes clear and moisture. Tears also protect the eyes from various infections. Few people suffer from dry eyes due to a sudden decrease in tear production. Such a condition is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Medical Conditions and Medicines

Dry eyes can also be a side effect of various health conditions like diabetes, lupus, thyroid, or Vitamin A deficiency. Dry eyes can also occur due to aging or due to the use of some medicines like antihistamines or decongestants.

Imbalance in Production of Tears

The tear film in our eyes comprises of three layers; made of mucus, oil, and water. Dry eyes can also occur when there is a problem with any of these layers. The symptoms can also occur if you have been through laser eye surgery, but it is temporary in most cases.

If you have been suffering from dry eyes, it is important to know what causes the symptoms. While prevention can be of little help, do not hither from seeing your doctor for a permanent solution.
